On this day in 1995, the Burlington band performed for a Voters for Choice benefit concert at the Lowell Memorial Auditorium in Lowell, MA. The group was introduced by Gloria Steinem, who promised fans more new music than ever before. Then, the band delivered.What followed was debut after debut – 10 new songs in total – including some beloved originals that have made it in rotation ever since. Songs like “Free” and “Theme From The Bottom,” which would later make it onto Billy Breathes, were featured in the performance. The show also featured the debut of “Strange Design,” and a cover of Velvet Underground’s “Lonesome Cowboy Bill” that would foreshadow the band’s full-album performance of Loaded in 1998.“Ha Ha Ha” got its start at this show, as did an unnamed original that would later be referred to as “Spock’s Brain.” After playing the song, drummer Jon Fishman polled the audience with some alternate title options, including The Plane, The First Single, Israel, and Spock’s Brain. We all know what the audience chose.Other debuts included the traditional “Don’t You Want To Go?,” the original song “Glide II,” Brian Eno’s “I’ll Come Running” and Van Morrison’s “Gloria” as the show finale. Ever the masters of pop-funk, Vulfpeck has shared their newest music video release from their 2016 The Beautiful Game. At the heart of it all is an insatiable groove, powered by Jack Stratton, Theo Katzman, Joe Dart and Woody Goss. “Animal Spirits” is perhaps the album’s purest pop in the spirit of the Jackson 5, as explained in our album review. But instead of Little Michael we hear Theo Katzman singing lead and displaying impeccable range and precision. His vocals are never overly flashy and they serve the song perfectly. With typically catchy and winking lyrics, thick layers of keyboards and of course some great Joe Dart bass work, this song is pure fun. Also listen closely to the smooth and rhythmic outro lyrics by Christine Hucal and you’ll hear a clever nod to another Vulf favorite, “Back Pocket.”Paired with the classic video antics of Jack Stratton, this song is given new life in a lyrical video (in both English in Japanese) with a classic Vulfified Stratton dancing in his red and whites in what appears to be the field from The Beautiful Game drone video premiere. “Twitter on your telly, ramen in you belly, economics, put it in my pocket,” the lyrics read across the screen of an otherwise difficult part of the song to understand. Everything is so clear now! So wonderfully clear.
Since 2014, the Chalice Festival has celebrated music and marijuana in Southern California. In 2018, the gathering will become the first such festival to allow recreational marijuana to be purchased on site from legal vendors. Slated to take place at the San Bernadino County Fairgrounds in Victorville, CA, from July 13th to 15th, Chalice Festival will feature performances by Bassnectar, Ludacris, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, Sizzla Kalonji, Curren$y, Cut Chemist, Pharcyde, and Thriftworks. While past events have catered to medical marijuana users and paraphernalia aficionados, this year’s event will allow on-site marijuana consumption and purchases for adults aged 21 and older. “On-site product vendors will be on hand to take advantage of the post-prohibition reality that legally mashes up recreational cannabis products with the large-scale music festival concept,” representatives from the festival reportedly said in a press release.Of course, the event will also showcase plenty glassblowers, hash makers, and street artists—just as it has since 2014. However, another thing that will set this year’s Chalice apart is the size. While the debut event drew 5,500 people to the fest, organizers are preparing for a crowd of at least 45,000 to show up in July.Voters in California approved a marijuana legalization initiative back in November of 2016, but the legal changes didn’t go into effect until January 1st, 2018. Once that happened, festival organizers around the state became eligible to apply for permits that allow them to host events where marijuana can be legally sold, smoked, and otherwise consumed, provided those events take place in one of 80 authorized county fair or district agricultural association properties in the state (such as the San Bernadino County Fairgrounds).Chalice has always been a marijuana-centric festival, so it’s no surprise that organizers have jumped at the chance to take advantage of California’s new approach to recreational marijuana. It’s a stark contrast with other Golden State festivals like Coachella, which won’t even allow attendees to bring their legally-acquired marijuana out to the festival grounds, let alone purchase it on site. “We’re expecting fifty to sixty thousand people this year, no exaggeration,” Chalice Founder Doug Dracup told Cannabis Now. “You know this isn’t just an opportunity for me, brands are bringing their A-game to really be seen and get put on the map. There are people coming from all over the world. For us, it’s just a crazy opportunity to show everybody what a legal cannabis festival looks like.”Tickets for the 2018 Chalice Festival are now on sale. Attendees must be 21 or older to enter the festival grounds.
On Saturday night, Pigeons Playing Ping Pong played the first show of their sold-out two-night stand at Port City Music Hall this weekend. By the time Vermont jam band Swimmer opened the show, the room was already filling up. By the time Pigeons came on it was as crowded as the Portland, Maine venue could possibly manage, the audience fully invested and singing along all night.The band responded in kind with a fantastic show including highlights like an inverted “Psycho Killer” (Talking Heads) segment sandwiched inside a “J-Town” jam and a cover of The Lion King‘s “I Just Can’t Wait To Be King” that recalled their Disney-themed 2017 New Year’s Eve performance, cleverly dubbed “DisNYE.” The entertaining covers came among fantastic renditions of Pigeons Playing Ping Pong favorites old and new like “Porcupine”, “Walk Outside”, “Henrietta”, “Su Casa”, “Whirled”, “Julia”, “Whoopie”, “Avalanche”, “Landing”, “CWA”, and “Bad For You”. Live Nation has announced its plans to open a Fillmore-branded venue in New Orleans. Dubbed The Fillmore at Harrah’s New Orleans, the space is slated to open in early 2019.The news was revealed today during a ceremony celebrating the 50th anniversary of the opening of San Francisco’s iconic Fillmore West. According to a press release, the forthcoming venue will feature a 2000-capacity room located inside Harrah’s Casino.“New Orleans is a city with a proud musical heritage, and we could not be more excited that The Fillmore will join the host of great live music that this city has to offer,” said Ron Bension, president of Live Nation’s Club & Theatre group. “The venue’s industry-leading amenities and intimate 2,000-person capacity fill a gap in the market and will attract performers that often bypass the city, which will ultimately give audiences an even wider array of concert experiences to enjoy.”“It was important to Harrah’s New Orleans that we find the right partner to help us transform our second-floor space into a destination,” said Dan Real, Caesars Entertainment regional president-south and Harrah’s New Orleans general manager. “In a city where live music abounds from street corners to the stage, The Fillmore is a perfect addition to Harrah’s New Orleans and will create memorable experiences for both locals and guests.”The New Orleans venue will be the newest addition to Live Nation’s Fillmore brand, which already includes rooms in Charlotte, NC; Miami, FL; Silver Spring, MD; Detroit, MI; and Philadelphia, PA. Considering its location, The Fillmore at Harrah’s New Orleans will showcase local architectural styles, such as wrought iron gates and gas street lanterns. The Fillmore at Harrah’s New Orleans will also include a Lobby Bar, BG’s Lounge, and a VIP room named after original Fillmore impresario, Bill Graham. In addition to the concert area, the venue will feature an array of private event spaces for corporate gatherings, weddings, private dinners, and more.
Today, Twiddle has announced the dates for their expansive fall tour, which will span from the end of August through to the beginning of October. In recent months, the Vermont-based jam act has been busy, collaborating with Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh and his son Grahame Lesh at Red Rocks and performing a series of collaborative concerts with their outfits, Phil Lesh & The Terrapin Family Band and Midnight North, under the banner “Unbroken Train.”For Twiddle’s newly announced fall tour, the band will kick things off with a two-night run with stops in Branford, Connecticut, on August 30th and Westerly, Rhode Island, on August 31st. Following a brief break, the band will reconvene on the road in mid-September with stops in West Virginia, Virginia, and North Carolina from September 13th to 15th. Continuing southward, the band will play Athens, Georgia, on September 17th ahead of a five-night run in Florida spanning September 19th to 23rd.Twiddle will continue to Greenville, South Carolina, on November 26th before returning to Georgia for a performance in Atlanta the following night. To finish out the southern leg of their fall tour, the band will roll through Nashville, TN; Birmingham, AL; and Chattanooga, TN, wrapping up on September 30th. Southern soul juggernaut Tedeschi Trucks Band is one of Jacksonville, FL’s most notable exports. Created by combining the solo bands of Jacksonville native guitar virtuoso Derek Trucks and his wife, guitarist/vocalist Susan Tedeschi, in 2010, the band has kept on growing ever since, releasing a number of award-winning albums and extensively touring the country playing to bigger and bigger crowds. The band recently wrapped the fourth-annual edition of their multi-band summer “Wheels of Soul” tour with Drive-By Truckers and The Marcus King Band with a pair of sold-out performances at the iconic Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, CO.However, despite their upward trajectory, the band has never forgotten their roots and continues to aid and take pride in their local Jacksonville community, particularly with regard to music education. According to the city’s WJCT FM station, the 12-piece powerhouse recently made a substantial and deeply personal donation to the city’s Englewood High School. The band supplied the school with 38 brand-new musical instruments for its students to use, valued at roughly $48,000.The students and staff of Englewood High School were informed of the reformative gift to the school’s music program earlier this summer when Tedeschi Trucks Band hit Jacksonville’s Daily’s Place Amphitheatre on June 29th to open their 2018 “Wheels of Soul” swing. Explains WJCT, the kids and faculty were invited to the hometown performance as special guests. Last year, Joe Russo’s Almost Dead’s Red Rocks performance was rescheduled to the end of August, falling the Thursday before Phish‘s annual run at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park kicked off on the Friday of Labor Day Weekend. In honor of the Phish-y festivities, JRAD offered up a Phish-laced performance, and this year, the group again gave their nod to the Vermont quartet. With many folks still stunned at Curveball‘s last-minute cancelation, Joe Russo and company offered up teases of “Wilson” during “Slipknot!”, with the audience cheering out “Wilson”, making for a cathartic moment for many of the fans who were previously scheduled to be flying out to New York for the festival earlier in the day.From there, Tom Hamilton led the band through a cover of Radiohead‘s “The Bends”, off the British rock act’s similarly named sophomore album, which was released in 1995. From there, to close out the second set, Joe Russo’s Almost Dead offered up a heartfelt, crowd-pleasing take on “Not Fade Away”, which also featured teases of fan-favorite “Throwing Stones” and hilariously, The Strangeloves’ “I Want Candy”, which was largely made popular in the ’80s with Bow Wow Wow‘s smash-hit cover.To close out the night in full, Joe Russo’s Almost Dead performed a take on Warren Zevon’s “Werewolves of London” before ending the night with “Franklin’s Tower”. A breathtaking “Bird Song” came next, gracefully transitioning into “Black Throated Wind” and through to the reprise of “Jack Straw”.
